India has started witnessing an increase in tuberculosis (TB) cases again, but still far short of the 2019 level of 176.2 cases per lakh people.

According to the India TB report 2023, the disease now has 172 cases per lakh people. The report stated that TB cases were reduced to 131.5 instances per lakh people in 2020. During the same period, a 13% increase was noted in 2022 compared to 2021. The overall number of MDR/RR (multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis) TB cases diagnosed in 2022 stood at 63,801, while the countrys presumptive TB examination rate (PTBER) increased by 68% from 763 in 2021 to 1281 in 2022.

Further, in 2012, India declared tuberculosis a "notifiable" disease. The Modi administration launched the Nikshay Poshan Yojana to provide nutritional support of Rs 500 per month to those suffering from the disease. Nikshay Mitras, a Government of India scheme that allows anyone in public to adopt tuberculosis patients and provide for their nutritional and medical requirements has pledged to assist more than 9 lakh TB patients.
